Police chase on Chicago’s South Side ends with 2 in custody

CHICAGO (CBS) — Two people wanted in connection with suburban residential burglaries were taken into custody following a high-speed police chase along Chicago’s Dan Ryan Expressway Friday afternoon.
The chain of events all started more than 20 miles away in Chicago’s western suburbs—and went on to take police to Chicago’s Northwest Side, and finally to the city’s South Side.
Downers Grove police said the suspects were wanted in connection with separate residential burglaries in unincorporated Kane County and Naperville earlier on Friday. Investigators later found them in the parking lot of a White Castle at Addison Street and Kedzie Avenue in Chicago’s Avondale neighborhood, and tried to arrest them.
The suspects escaped, and fled in a Nissan Rogue. They struck and injured a suburban task force officer, who was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.
The Illinois State Police Aviation Unit said the suspects switched cars at 31st Street and the Dan Ryan Expressway, and got into a Dodge minivan.
Chicago police were seen chasing the minivan along the Dan Ryan shortly after 4 p.m., zigzagging back and forth through traffic. At one point, a squad car collided with the minivan and then a concrete dividing wall on the expressway.
The minivan later exited the Dan Ryan at 71st Street, and stopped outside a nearby high-rise building, where two suspects got out of the vehicle and were taken into custody as several police vehicles surrounded the minivan from both directions.
CBS Skywatch was overhead as the suspects’ minivan weaved between vehicles caught in evening rush hour traffic on the Dan Ryan. The helicopter video also showed the chase reach its conclusion with arrests on 71st Street.
Police continue to investigate the incident.
As of late Friday, no charges had been announced.
